Statistics relating to enlargement of the European Union
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
This is a sequence of tables giving statistical data for past, pending, and possible future enlargements of the European Union. It does not include data for the possible inclusion of Israel, Cape Verde or Morocco, all of which have shown an interest in joining the EU, since none of these countries lie within or have territory in Europe. In the cases of Morocco and Israel, membership is not considered possible, however the position of Cape Verde is more ambiguous as it was first settled by the Portuguese, has strong cultural and economic ties to Europe. It is, in many ways, an African equivalent of Cyprus, an island nation lying in Asia which has similarly strong cultural and economic ties to Europe.

[edit] Barcelona Process nations
These nations are unlikely to join the EU, because they are outside Europe, but on the other hand they are participants in the Barcelona Process, with the aim of aligning themselves and integrating with the EU (but not joining it). This will lead to significant improvements in their relations with the EU, which in some cases are already better than EU relations with some Eastern European countries already mentioned. For example relations between the EU and Tunisia are better than relations with Belarus, so it is more likely in that sense that Tunisia or Israel would join sooner than Belarus. In addition, the reason for the admission of Cyprus was largely for historical, cultural and political ties with the state, rather than geographical concerns. If there is to be further integration, this could apply also to the Barcelona Process participants, which is why they are worth mentioning in this context.

1 German reunification in 1990 led to the inclusion of the territory of the former German Democratic Republic. This enlargement is not explicitly mentioned. Data for Germany in all tables is from current statistics.
2 Greenland left the EC in 1985.
3 Officially the whole of Cyprus lies within the European Union. "In light of Protocol 10 of the Accession Treaty 2003 Cyprus as a whole entered the EU, whereas the acquis is suspended in the northern part of the island (“areas not under effective control of the Government of the Republic of Cyprus”). This means inter alia that these areas are outside the customs and fiscal territory of the EU. The suspension has territorial effect, but does not concern the personal rights of Turkish Cypriots as EU citizens, as they are considered as citizens of the Member State Republic of Cyprus"[1].
