Stefano Sorrentino(28 March,1979 - ) is an Italian football player currently playing the position of goalkeeper for AEK Athens FC. Sorrentino has also had spells with SS Lazio in Italy, as well as Juventus FC, Varese and his previous club before joining AEK, Torino FC.
[edit] In AEK Athens
He was given on loan by Torino in AEK Athens, in the summer of 2005.However, Torino's serious financial problems, led to release him from the club. He was signed immediately by AEK Athens, with a contract of 4 years. He is considered the best goalkeeper in the Greek Superleague, due to his incredible performances.
After the birth of his daughter, Sorrentino asked from president of AEK Athens Demis Nikolaidis, to let him return to Italy, because he was not feeling comfortable enough in Greece. However, no ideal offer was made (just Genoa's 300.000 euros, which was rejected from AEK Athens, as Sorrentino was valued until then at least 600.000). Sorrentino made it clear that if he had to stay in Greece, he would be 100% proffesional, as he did. Fans of AEK Athens respected that, and chant his name in every game. Sorrenitno's peak performance was versus AC Milan, in a Champions League match. AEK beat Milan 1-0, and Sorrentino was announced MVP. Rapidly, AC Milan, Lazio and Livorno, have declared their interest in him. He is said to leave in the summer of 2007, but after the great performances, both in Greek Superleague and Champions League, his value is at least 1.600.000 euros.
