[edit] Plot

[edit] Mrs. Renee's Workout

Mrs. Renee is working out on the exercise belt machine and greets the audience. She asks Pee-wee to get off now. But Pee-wee (being the silly guy he likes to be) says, "NO!" But after some "convincing" (and a loud yell of "TURN IT OFF!!"), Pee-wee releases her. "What a workout," Mrs. Renee says. "What're ya talkin' about?" the belt says. "I did all the work!" Mrs. Renee then asks Pee-wee what the secret word is, but since Pee-wee doesn't know, they decide to go ask Conky. So they go over to Pee-wee's favorite robot.

[edit] Guess the Secret Word

Pee-wee unplugs Conky from the wall and brings him to life. Conky says he's ready to assist Pee-wee, who then asks what the secret word is. However, before Conky can respond, Pee-wee decides to play a guessing game as to what it is. "Let's see," Pee-wee says. "Is it, uh, 'poodle'?" "No," says Conky. "'Triangle'?" asks Pee-wee. "No, not today," says Conky. "'Mango'?" asks Pee-wee. "No," says Conky. Then Mrs. Renee guesses, "'Escalator'?" The robot just says no. "Okay, give us a hint," says Pee-wee.

So Conky then heads over to the front door of the playhouse and says, "Today's secret word rhymes this thing." "'Door'!" Pee-wee exclaims. But Conky just says no. So Pee-wee, Mrs. Renee and the other playhouse denizens all try to take guesses as to what the secret word could be that rhymes with "door":

PEE-WEE: "'Chore'."
CONKY: "No."
PEE-WEE: "'Bore'."
CONKY: "No."
CLOCKEY: "'Four'?"
CONKY: "No, Clockey."
FLOORY: "'Floor'?"
CONKY: "No, more. More!"
PEE-WEE: "'Floor'? 'Gore'? 'Wore'?"
FISH IN AQUARIUM: "'Shore'?"
COOL CAT: "'Roar'?"
PTERRI: "'Soar'?"
CHAIRRY: "'Snore'?"
GLOBEY: "'Core'?"
MRS. RENEE: "'Gabor'!"
CONKY: "No, more!"
PEE-WEE: "'Lore'! 'Tore'! 'Pour'!"
CONKY: "No, more! More!!"
PEE-WEE: (agitated) "I can't think of any more!"
CONKY: "No, Pee-wee, look."

A piece of cardstock pops out of Conky's midsection, with the word, MORE, written. Pee-wee takes the card and looks at it. Then he laughs and shows it to the audience: "Today's secret word is 'more'!" Mrs. Renee says she was just about to guess that. "I'm so sure, Mrs. Renee," Pee-wee replies. He reminds viewers of what to do whenever everyone says the secret word and then tries it out on Mrs. Renee: "Hey, Mrs. Renee, would you like to use the exercise belt again?" "Oh no, Pee-wee," says Mrs. Renee. "I've had enough exercise for one day. No more." Everyone screams. Mrs. Renee laughs and tells Pee-wee that he got her. She says good-bye to Pee-wee and leaves. Then Pee-wee removes a cracker and looks at Pterri and says, "Pterri want a cracker?" "Yes, I do!" Pterri says. "Thank you." Pee-wee tosses the cracker to the pterodactyl, who then says that he wants some more. Of course, everyone screams.

[edit] Snack Time: Frozen Fruit Cubes

Pee-wee then decides to do something new for Snack Time: frozen fruit cubes! However, as he explains, fruit cubes take a long time to make, so he decides to make them now, so that they can be enjoyed later. He gets some ice cube trays and pours the following fruit juices into the trays: orange juice, pineapple juice, lemonade and grape juice. Conky asks him if one can use cranberry juice and Pee-wee says yes. Then Magic Screen asks him if one can use prune juice, too. Pee-wee says they can do that, too. Then he says it's now time for the frozen part: just put them in the freezer and wait.

He places the two trays full of fruit juice into the freezer where some of the food inside use the trays as kayaks, even though there's no water.

[edit] Cowboy Curits

Mr. Window then signals for Cowboy Curtis' arrival. He enter the playhouse, intending to play with Pee-wee. He has brought with him his colorful lasso. After showing off a few tricks, he playfully uses it to grab Pee-wee and pull him closer, after which he starts tickling him. Pee-wee, laughing his head off, tells Curtis to stop. "Why, I didn't know you was ticklish, Pee-wee," Curtis says. "Yeah, well, now you know, okay?" Pee-wee replies. He then asks Curtis if he is ticklish. Curtis denies this. Pee-wee asks if he is sure. Curtis says, "Sure I'm sure." So Pee-wee grabs Curtis and starts tickling him. Laughing, Curtis says, "No more, Pee-wee!" Everyone screams.

They watch Pee-wee's ants in the ant farm for a minute. A female ant is walking along, carrying a piece of luggage in a cart behind her. She stops to cry, then presses on. She stops when some ants pop out and cheer, with a sign with the word SURPRISE displayed on it nearby. Curtis comments that he loves those ants. Pee-wee asks if maybe he should marry them. Curtis then removes a rubber band from his sleeve. It's for Pee-wee's rubber-band ball. Pee-wee promptly decides to see how big his ball is today. He tosses the ball to Curtis; it's getting big. Pee-wee puts the rubber band on his ball and then bounces it. "Y'know, if I thought one rubber would make you that happy," says Curtis, "I'd've brought you more." Everyone screams.

[edit] The Train

Magic Screen then says to Pee-wee that it's time to play with it. Cowboy Curtis asks if he can play, too. "Sure, if it's okay with Magic Screen," Pee-wee replies. "Sure, jump in!" Magic Screen says. So they both jump into the screen. Pee-wee throws out his dots and of course does his connect-the-dots chant (with Curtis joining in). The background changes to a desert-type setting. The dots form an old-fashioned railroad handcar. But there are no tracks. However, Pee-wee takes care of that. He removes more dots that form railroad tracks. They then jump onto the handcar, each at the other end and start pumping it. It moves down the tracks, past desert wildlife and then entering a train tunnel. Suddenly, they go in the opposite direction out of the tunnel, pumping the handcar for dear life to outrun an oncoming train! Pee-wee and Curtis then leap from the handcar and out of the screen, landing on Chairry, as always. "Gotcha, partners," she says. Since they're both sitting on her simultaneously, it's a little tight for them to be sitting on her simultaneously.

Mr. Window then says to Pee-wee that Reba the Mail Lady is coming. She enters and notices Pee-wee and Curtis both sitting in Chairry simultaneously. "Isn't Chairry a little small for the both of you?" she asks. They climb off Chairry and explain what just happened. But she doesn't really believe them, so they ask her to see for herself. "Just jump in," Magic Screen adds. So she does so. She lands in the same desert setting as Pee-wee and Curtis, right next to the tunnel. She comments that the post office will never believe this, but she doesn't see a train. She goes inside the tunnel for a better look. Suddenly, she hears a train coming and races out of the tunnel. Magic Screen tells her to jump and she does so, also landing on Chairry. Reba gets up and says, "I wouldn't've believed it if I hadn't seen it with my own eyes. In fact, I did see it with my own eyes and I still don't believe it." Pee-wee and Curtis laugh.

Reba then gives Pee-wee his mail; it's pen-pal letters, as always. She then says she has one more. Everyone screams. Reba stares. "Don't tell me," she says. "I said the secret word?" "Okay, I won't tell you," Pee-wee says. "You know, Pee-wee," Reba says, "delivering mail to your house is like... it's like... nothing is like delivering mail to your house." She then leaves, saying good-bye as she goes.

[edit] Boomerang

"Oh, boy! A pen pal letter!" Pee-wee says gleefully. "You don't mind if I read one, do you, Cowboy Curtis?" "Why, not at all, Pee-wee," Curtis replies.

They sit down on Chairry and Pee-wee opens the envelope up. This pen pal letter is from Australia. "That's over here, Pee-wee," Globey says, pointing to the location of the continent on himself. "Australia's the smallest of the continents." Pee-wee reads the letter:

G'day, Pee-wee,
Greetings from down under. My name is Olivia Newton-Jack and I live in Canberra, my country's capital. Kangaroos, platypuses and koala bears come from our country. Here is a boomerang for you. Try throwing it.
Your friend, Olivia

While reading the letter, when he gets to "down under", Pee-wee says, "Down under what?" He also says he's never heard of Canberra, which he pronounces as can-BEAR-uh. Then he takes out the boomerang that came with the letter and says, "Hmm, don't mind if I do." He tosses the boomerang. Sure enough, it goes flying and spinning around in the playhouse. It then spins through the mousehole. It manages to drop two fruits from a fruit tree for the two kid dinosaurs to eat. It also removes some wash that Mrs. Dinosaur had just hung on the clothesline and put it on her. It then spins back out of the mousehole and Pee-wee catches it. He then plops it on the flowerbox sill and says to it, "Stay." He then sits back down on Chairry. Clocky asks him what time it is. "What time is it?" Pee-wee asks. Clocky says it's time for another Penny cartoon, which gets shown without delay.

[edit] Trivia

  • Featured cartoon: "Makin' 'em Move" (1931).
  • Most Australians pronounce Canberra "CAN-bruh." A minority pronounce it "CAN-buh-ruh" and a few use "can-BEAR-uh" (as Pee-wee does), though the latter is generally considered incorrect. The varying pronunciation is to some extent a class-based difference.
  • Mrs. Renee guesses the name "Gabor" as the secret word. This is the last name of television personality Zsa Zsa Gabor. Zsa Zsa would be one of the many guests on Pee-wee's Playhouse Christmas Special.
  • "Door" was actually the secret word on the pilot episode, Ice Cream Soup.
  • The Penny cartoon featured in this episode reveals that Penny has an identical twin sister. Penny's apparently wicked twin bit her sister's stomach when she was just a baby, which explains why she's so thin. They get into fights at shopping malls, but in a picture where they wear the same outfit, they seem to be enjoying each other's company.
