The most famous application of the bunker was during World War II. The German Third Reich built the pens in order to avoid air attacks from the Allied Forces. They were generally effective until the introduction of the Tallboy bomb which was able to penetrate the thick reinforced concrete indicative of German construction.
German U-boat bases in France include: Brest, Lorient, St. Nazaire, La Rochelle, Bordeaux, and Toulon. In Norway, Trondheim was the site of a large base.
