Sunshine is a 2007 science fiction suspense film directed by Danny Boyle. The screenplay is by Alex Garland. The film stars Rose Byrne, Cliff Curtis, Chris Evans, Troy Garity, Cillian Murphy, Hiroyuki Sanada, Benedict Wong, and Michelle Yeoh. Fox Searchlight is distributing the film, which is scheduled to open in the U.K. on April 6 2007, and in the U.S. in fall or winter 2007.

Fifty years into the future, the sun is failing, causing the Earth to begin dying out. A spacecraft with a crew of eight men and women is launched as a last hope,^[2] carrying a dark matter-filled bomb the size of Kansas in order to re-ignite part of the sun. Seven years prior, a similar ship had been launched for the same mission, but contact was lost with the ship.^[3] When the crew of eight move toward the sun and out of radio contact with Earth, they experience accidents and discover the distress beacon of the ship that had been missing for seven years. After an informed decision, the crew decides that it is best to rendezvous with the stricken vessel in order to obtain the dark matter bomb from the earlier mission. Upon altering their path to reach Icarus I, a shield which protects them from the sun's rays is damaged, forcing them to stop momentarily to fix the problem. Events unravel such that large quantities of the crew's oxygen supplies are damaged, meaning that only four crew members can make the journey to the Sun to deliver the payload.

In March 2005, following Millions, director Danny Boyle entered pre-production work for Sunshine, for which he planned to commence production by the following July.^[3] Screenwriter Alex Garland, who had paired with Boyle for The Beach and 28 Days Later, wrote a script for Sunshine. In June 2005, actors Michelle Yeoh, Cillian Murphy, and Chris Evans entered talks with the studio Fox Searchlight with filming to begin later in the summer in the UK.^[4] With actors Rose Byrne, Hiroyuki Sanada, Cliff Curtis, Troy Garity, and Benedict Wong added to the cast of Sunshine, filming was announced to have begun on August 23, 2005 in London.^[2] The film's set took place at a studio in Three Mills in the East End of London and included 17 sets, 8 stages, detailed models and three film units. The director chose for the characters' spacesuits to be golden in order to make Sunshine stand out with science fiction fans. The producers required the actors to speak with an American accent in order to target the U.S. audience strongly in addition to international audiences.^[1]

On June 21, 2006, Fox Searchlight posted trailer footage on the official film blog for Sunshine.^[5] In January 2007, the trailer had begun showing in the UK with the films Casino Royale and White Noise: The Light.^[6]
