The Red Army are a UK Hooligan firm affiliated to Manchester United with many believing they have the greatest reputation of all the football hooligan firms.[citation needed] They were one of a few firms which had a fearsome reputation in the 1970s and 1980s. They have had a long standing rivalry with the Inter City Firm, (ICF) who follow West Ham United.[citation needed] The Red Army were featured in the 1985 documentary 'Hooligan' which was based around West Ham's trip to Old Trafford in the FA Cup 6th Round amd shows The Red Army chasing and attacking the ICF around Manchester.
The most famous member and ringleader of the The Red Army was Tony O'Neill, who led the firm in the late 1970s until around 2001 when he was banned from football grounds.[citation needed] O'Neill has released two books about the exploits of the Red Army -
- Red Army General which focuses on the firm in the 1970s and 1980s.
- The Men In Black: Inside Manchester United's Football Hooligan Firm which tells of the firm in the late 1980s, 1990s and the early 2000s.
The name Men In Black comes from the Red Army wearing all black to matches, most notably in one match at Upton Park where they ambushed West Ham fans wearing balaclavas.[citation needed]
