Thonmi Sambhota
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Thonmi Sambhota is the traditional inventor of the Tibetan script in the 7th C. AD. However, he is not mentioned in any Old Tibetan texts.
He is traditionally thought to have been a minister of the emperor Songtsen Gampo and sent on a mission to India by the emperor to gather information about Buddhism. The minister then reputedly devised a script for Tibetan language based on the Devanagari model and also wrote a grammar of Tibetan based on Sanskrit grammars.
