"To Challenge the Sun" (「太陽に挑む者」 Taiyou ni Idomu Mono?) is the first episode of the Fullmetal Alchemist TV series originally aired 2003-10-04. This episode was known as "To Challenge the Sun" on Adult Swim's edited version, but on the un-edited version the title was "Those Who Challenge the Sun."

In a brief flashback two young boys, Edward and Alphonse Elric, attempt to perform an alchemical transmutation. Something goes horribly wrong. Alphonse disappears, Edward is missing his left leg and right arm, and a grotesque figure reminiscent of their mother appears out of the transmutation circle.
In the present day, the brothers, Edward now 15 and Alphonse 14, are walking across the desert to a town named Lior on the Eastern Frontier. Alphonse's soul is now in the suit of armor, attached by the blood seal his elder brother had made. At a small restaurant, they hear a radio broadcast by the local religious leader, Father Cornello. The residents of Lior say that Father Cornello is a genuine miracle worker. Rosé, a young woman who works for Cornello, takes Ed and Al to the temple’s visitors’ quarters.
Watching a public demonstration of Father Cornello’s miracles, Ed and Al quickly realize that Cornello is merely performing the science of alchemy, but he appears to be violating the Law of Equivalent Exchange. Indeed, the red gem in the Father’s ring may be the very thing for which the Elric brothers have been searching a long time. Worried that a State Alchemist with a fearsome reputation such as Edward Elric might reveal the true nature of his “miracles” to the public, Father Cornello orders Cray, his right-hand man, to dispose of the brothers.
While Ed is having a conversation with Rosé, Cray shoots Al in the head, knocking his helmet to the floor. But the armor is empty; Alphonse is the suit of armor. Ed knocks Cray unconscious by throwing Al’s helmet at him, and Al explains to a very frightened Rosé that existing as an empty suit of armor is his punishment for a great sin. Following Rosé to Father Cornello, Ed and Al confront him about his ring. Cornello admits that his ring is a Philosopher’s Stone, a source of great alchemical power. He’s not about to surrender it to a representative of the State Military, namely Edward. Ed demands the stone, not for the military, but for himself, to right a great wrong. Cornello orders two chimeras to attack Ed, but his left leg and right arm survive the attack because they are "auto-mail," a sophisticated kind of prosthetic. Cornello realizes that Al lacks a body and Ed has two artificial limbs because the brothers committed the ultimate sin for an alchemist—they tried to perform a human transmutation. Small wonder, then, that Edward is known as "The Fullmetal Alchemist."

All Names in the show have a meaning. For inctence...Edward means 'rich guard', 'guard or 'blessed'and Elric means 'Elf Ruler' a long time ago, though most know it as 'noble ruler'. Both meanings are proper, though the name was rarely used after the Norman conquest.
