Turone's goal
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
"Turone's goal" has been for decades one of the most debated event in the history of Italian Football. It refers to the disallowing of a goal scored by the team of Roma versus Juventus in a crucial match valid for Serie A 1980-81 and played in the last rounds of the league when the two teams were, along with Napoli, fighting for the title.
[edit] Facts
The fact occurred in Turin (10th May 1981) during the match between the home team Juventus and away Roma. At that date Juventus were topping the League by one over the runners-up Roma (40 pts. vs 39) and after that match there would have been just two per side to play. The match revealed itself to be a tight game, with many fouls and hard tackles both sides, and home team were aware they could play for two results, the draw being sufficient to keep the advantage in the League. In the second half Juventus's midfielder Giuseppe Furino was showed the red card because of too many fouls and sent out. The match still remained tight until 10 minutes to the end, when in a move of Roma, started by Carlo Ancelotti, the sweeper Maurizio Turone headed on goal a passage sent by the forward Roberto Pruzzo. The goalkeeper Dino Zoff could not save and it seemed the away team had scored the 1-0 that made them lead the match but the linesman signaled to the referee Paolo Bergamo that Turone was offside and the goal was not attributed. The match eventually ended 0-0 and Juventus won the next two games (Napoli away 1-0, and Fiorentina home 1-0), winning its 19th Italian League title by two (44 vs 42).
That cancelled goal originated a huge controversy that still last under certain forms - such as strong rivalry between Roma's and Juventus's supporters.
Several attempts to analyse the position of Turone have been done during the years but the results were different and contradictory.
[edit] Some images
In the following frame the moment of the pass of Pruzzo is illustrated.
In the following the same image as above is reedited, based on the properties of perspective, showing the vanishing point, as the point where the goal line and the goal-area line meet, and consequently a red line is drawn as the line that is parallel to the goal line and is passing by the more advanced foot of Turone.
The main problem, that the analyses of the goal regularity had to deal with, is that the feet of Prandelli (the player of Juventus jumping on the side of Pruzzo) are not on the ground and it is therefore hard to detect the projection of his position on the playing field. To estimate the position of Prandelli it is needed to base on a previous image where the player's feet are still on the ground. In the following this position is indicated by the lower end of the blue line in the same image as above.
