For much of its length, BUS US 127 in St. Johns traverses the former route of US 27 which served the city of St. Johns from 1926 to 1996. When US 27 was relocated onto a new freeway bypass in the mid-1990s, much of the former route through the area was redesignated as BUS US 27. A few years later in 2002, all of US 27 from Lansing northerly was redesignated as an extension of US 127, this converting this route from Business US 27 to Business US 127.

[edit] Termini
[edit] Northern terminus
The northern terminus of Business US 127 nearly coincides with the northern end of the existing US 127 freeway in Clinton County. Approximately one-half mile north of the Business US 127 interchange north of St. Johns, the US 127 freeway merges back onto its former alignment to proceed northerly into Gratiot County. South of this interchange, Business US 127 follows the former route of Business US 27 (1996-2002) and US 27 before that.
[edit] Southern terminus
The southern terminus of Business US 127 is the Price Road interchange along US 127 south of St. Johns.
