Ulrich "Uli" Stein (born 23 October 1954 in Hamburg) is a former German football player.
He was a goalkeeper and played from 1978 to 1997 512 times in the German Bundesliga. He started his career in 1978 for Arminia Bielefeld. After two years, he was transferred to Hamburger SV, where he played from 1980 to 1987. From 1987 to 1994 he played for Eintracht Frankfurt, but at 1994 he came back to Hamburger SV. One year later, he changed to Arminia Bielefeld again. In the season 1996/1997 he has ended his career.
With Hamburger SV he has won the DFB-Pokal (German FA CUP) in 1987, and he was 2 times German Bundesliga-Champion in 1982 and 1983. But his Highlight was, for sure, the European Champion Cup (UEFA Champions League) in 1983, which he also won with Hamburger SV. With Eintracht Frankfurt, he has won the DFB-Pokal in 1988.
In the national team he played 6 games in time from 1983 to 1986. He was in the German team of World Cup 1986 in Mexico. His career in the national team ended, because he insulted coach Franz Beckenbauer and the whole team.
At DFB-Pokal 1986/1987 in the match of Hamburger SV against FC Augsburg, he got the red card and after that, he showed the middle finger to the supporters of Augsburg. But there is a harder story: in the supercup of 1987, he gave Jürgen Wegmann, player of Bayern München, a punch with the fist. After this scene, he was fired from Hamburger SV.
He found a new Club in Eintracht Frankfurt, where he played till 1994, fired again. But in this time he become the most favorite goalkeeper ever played in this club, voted by the supporters. In his seven years in Frankfurt he escaped being relegated in 1989. Only three years later (1991-1992) he lost with Eintracht Frankfurt the German championship unfortunately by only one victory and two points.
