Viewtiful Joe 2 is a video game and sequel to Viewtiful Joe. The game was developed by Clover Studio and published by Capcom and released on November 23, 2004 for Nintendo GameCube and Sony PlayStation 2.
Viewtiful Joe 2 is a 3D side scrolling fighting adventure in which the player takes control of Joe in a fictitious world called "Movieworld". Within Movieworld, Joe has "VFX Powers" such as Slow (similar to bullet-time), Mach Speed, and Zoom at his disposal to defeat the enemy. He is joined by girlfriend Silvia, who has also acquired VFX powers. However, Silvia has "Replay", which allows her to repeat an event three times in succession, instead of Joe's Mach Speed. During the game, the player can switch between Joe and Silvia at any time, and holding the "switch" button enables them to use a special attack. In a preview in the first Viewtiful Joe, Silvia and Joe were shown onscreen fighting at the same time, hinting at co-op play. This was apparently dropped later, however.

[edit] Story
Picking up from the end of the first game, an alien fleet dubbed "Gedow" has begun an invasion on Movieworld in an attempt to gain the Rainbow Oscars, 7 statuettes that claim to hold "the power of happy endings". When Viewtiful Joe and his new fighting partner Sexy Silvia arrive at the battlefield, they're first forced to watch as Captain Blue himself is turned into one of the Oscars, then suffer as the Gedow throw them off into an unfamiliar part of Movieland out of spite. With the fate of Movieworld in the balance, Joe and Silvia quickly spring into action.
[edit] Cast
- Joe: Better known as the superhero Viewtiful Joe who defeated the Jadow. But now who must save his idol Captain Blue from the evil Gedow.
- Silvia: Also known as the heroine Sexy Silvia. Captain Blue gave her a V-Watch so she can team up with Joe & aid him in his adventure.
- Captain Blue: Joe's idol and guru. He was kidnapped by the Gedow and turned into a Rainbow Oscar.
- Jet Black: Joe's father and an old friend of Captain Blue. Runs the Movie theatre that King Blue & Six Majin trashed at the start of the previous Game.
- Alastor: A former agent of the long disbanded Jadow, Alastor still considers himself to be Joe's rival.
- Black Emperor: The mysterious leader of the Gedow. Pilots the Dark Kaiser Robot. He is actually Joe's dad, Jet
- Dr. Cranken: The "Mad Scientist" that faithfully serves the Gedow and is the Black Emperor's right-hand man and is the head of the Gedow weapons research division. He created rachel and Cameo Leon
- Miss Bloody Rachel: A "Serial Killer Android" created by Dr. Cranken. In Stage 6, she attempts to destroy Joe & Silvia by transforming into bosses from earlier in the game, (Big John, Flinty Stone, Cameo Leon & Frost Tiger). She appears to be a parody of the replicant Rachael from the movie "Bladerunner".
- Big John: A T-Rex agent of the Gedow who apparently had lots of minor roles in many Movies. Nicknamed "Drill Sergeant" and will appear in almost every Reel of the Game. (Technically, he doesn't make a personal appearance in Stage 6, for Rachel transforms into him.)
- Flinty Stone: A Golem-like agent of the Gedow nicknamed "Ancient Guardian". Suffers from a form of narcolepsy and speaks with an Austrian dialect. He can't seem to stay awake when multiple people talk at once.
- Cameo Leon: A Chameleon monster created by Dr. Cranken, nicknamed "Cyber Phantom". Speaks incredibly quickly and appears to be rather simple-minded (in other words, he talks faster than he thinks). Proud(?) holder of the title for "Longest Death Sequence in the Series".
- Frost Tiger: A tiger-like agent of Gedow nicknamed "Blizzard Hazard". He is the brother of the previous game's Fire Leo and fashions himself after archetypal samurai characters. He bears no grudge against Joe for his brother, but fights him to see if he is worthy of that victory. Fights almost exactly in the same fashion as Fire Leo.
[edit] Kamen Rider/Super Sentai References
- At the penultimate battle, the giant robot Six Majin and the spaceship Great Six Majin combine into Six x Six Majin [Said as "Six-Six Majin"]. This is similar to how mecha would combine into bigger mecha in Super Sentai.
- Jet Black's henshin cry of "Tenshin!" (Which roughly translated to : "Heavenly Transform!") was part of the Henshin cry in the 1993 Sentai series Gosei Sentai Dairanger , in which the team cried out "Kiryoku Tenshin! [Aura/Kiba] CHANGER!"
- Cameo Leon is probably the cameo of a chamelion from Kamen Rider Black.
[edit] Other References/Similarities
- The plot, from the Rainbow Oscars (Rainbow Crystals) to the Gedow aliens (Negaverse), appears to be a homage (or parody) of the Sailor Moon anime.
- The order of colours the Oscars are collected in is in the exact same pattern as the Chaos Emeralds from the Sonic the Hedgehog series are collected in, starting with green and ending with light blue.
- Alastor's Underworld Emperor Form is exactly the same as his Devil May Cry Counterpart, and even opens the battle in the same way Dante earned the sword, which span at the protagonist and in the case of the VFX-less Dante, ran him through (Joe however, dodged this).
- The scene in which Jet and Joe punch each other in the face is slightly similar to what happened in the boxing anime series Ashita no Joe. The scene can also be perceived as a homage to a similar scene between Son Goku and Vegeta in Dragonball Z or Dragonball GT.
- The yellow, alien-like robots within the final stage of the game are based exactly on the classic "Xenomorph" designs from Ridley Scott's classic movie Alien.
- Dr. Cranken could be considered to be modeled a bit after Doctor Octopus of Spider-Man fame (A Kraken is a mythical giant squid-like creature). It could also be a take on Dr. Frankenstein or Cthulhu.
- The 36 Chambers of Viewtiful, which are small missions that are unlocked under certain conditions in the game, are somewhat of an homage to The 36th Chamber of Shaolin. It should be noted that there are actually 37 chambers in this game.
- Also of note, when players choose to play the 36 Chambers of Viewtiful, the Clover Studio logo appears again, as a parody of the logo for Golden Harvest Studios. Golden Harvest is a Chinese movie studio that has produced many well-known martial arts movies.
- In Frost Tiger's Level there is a section that looks like the NES game Ice Climber.

[edit] Issues
The PlayStation 2 demo for this game contained a bug that erased all saved files on all memory cards inserted when played. Players were advised to not play the game, or remove the cards before playing. Capcom came with an official apology for all players' losses but could not contribute replacements. But Sony for a short time did offer older Greatest Hits games to those that had their memory cards erased. [1]
[edit] Reaction
IGN gave a rating of 9.0, citing the game's deep and satisfying gameplay, and that "all sequels should be this good". [1]
The game is hailed for its old-school difficulty and action, which it seems is one of the game's goals: difficult but fair.
Official UK PlayStation 2 Magazine gave it an 8 out of 10, saying that they would've settled for more of the same but got a little extra, adding it was almost a photocopy of the original game with minor changes.
