Vilkaviškis (pronunciation (help·info) is a city in southwestern Lithuania, 25 km northeast from Marijampolė, on a bank of River Šeimena. The city got its name from the River Vilkauja a tributary to River Šeimena. Initially named Vilkaujiškis the name was later changed to an easier to pronounce form Vilkaviškis. Until 1940 the city had a large Jewish Community which was annihilated by the Nazis.
