[edit] Biography
Ismail begain training BJJ in 1980, but did not get serious until he moved from Amazonas to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in 1984, and met Carlson Gracie. He soon began competing in Jiu-Jitsu tournaments, and participated in one of the first modern mixed martial arts events, Desafio: Jiu-Jitsu vs. Luta Livre as a purple belt in 1991, alongside Murilo Bustamante.
Ismail soon begain fighting in vale tudo events in Brazil, and in 1997 he fought at UFC 12, taking a decision loss to Yoshiki Takahashi. In 1998, Ismail signed with PRIDE, making his debut at PRIDE 4 against Akira Shoji. Although he lost the bout, Ismail returned at PRIDE 15 with a win by arm triangle over Shungo Oyama. Ismail would return at PRIDE 19, but took a hard fought decision loss to Alex Stiebling. Ismail's last MMA bout was at the Inoki Boom-Ba-Ye 2002, and while he says he is not retired from fighting, Ismail has not fought since. [2]
Following his appearance at the Inoki Boom-Ba-Ye, Ismail joined New Japan Pro Wrestling, training fighters with Japanese pro wrestling legend Antonio Inoki, at the Inoki Dojo. His partnership with Inoki led to a series of mixed martial art events called Jungle Fight, co-promoted by Inoki and Ismail. The promotion was unique in that fights would take place in resorts and hotels in the middle of the Amazon rain forest, in Manaus, Brazil.
