[edit] Title
New York County Routes WikiProject
[edit] Scope
This project covers all county routes in New York State.
[edit] Goals
- To standardize, organize and expand all articles regarding county routes in New York State.

If you are interested in a newsletter, please add yourself to Wikipedia:WikiProject U.S. Roads/Newsletter/List. New members will no longer be added to this list.
- Tckma 15:56, 2 August 2006 (UTC) I could potentially help out with Suffolk County. I grew up in Nassau County, which has not had county routes since the 60s.
- TwinsMetsFan: Have been making shields for Dutchess, Westchester and Suffolk county routes for some time now and can make more for other counties upon request. From Monroe County (which does not sign or even reference any county routes) but am close to Livingston County, which signs all of its county routes in prominent fashion.
- Polaron – will help out with Dutchess, Putnam, and Westchester routes
- DanTD Being a Long Island-raised roadgeek, I'll request and add shields for any Suffolk County Roads that need them.
- Northenglish Will help where I can, including making images.
- Mitchazenia There's one special route i wanna do. Saratoga County 1345.
- Benje309 I can help with routes in Westchester
- JohnnyAlbert10 I don't know much about NY county routes, but happy to help.
[edit] How you can help
You can help by opening the County routes in New York article, selecting a county, then selecting any route in red (which means that there is no article for it yet) and starting that article, or opening any route that you can provide more information about.
Most of the existing route articles need to be modified to comply with the project standard (see below). You can open Category:New York State articles needing work and review what has been noted to need work there under the "New York County Routes Project" section. Also, you can check Category:New York road stubs to see which articles need expanding.
Routes in Category:Routes needing mileposts have been converted to the new standard but are missing mileposts for the junctions. You can open this category and add mileposts for any route listed. Once the mile column has been completed (to the nearest tenth for each junction), the Mileposts tag can be removed.
[edit] Adopt an article
Similar to the Collaboration of the week, but on a smaller scale, you might want to "adopt" an article. This would involve doing the research, writing, and picture-taking (if possible) for either a non-existent article or a stub. Of course, everyone else can still edit an adopted article, and you can work on other things too, but the idea is to find a focus for a while, to try and build up the number of quality articles the Project has produced.
- Example article: TwinsMetsFan - County Route 62 (Livingston County, New York)
[edit] Structure
All articles should be in the form "County Route X (Y County, New York)", where X is the route number and Y is the name of the county. This is in line with the convention used at other county route projects, such as WP:NJSCR, and can also be used with the "pipe trick" when editing (though this is not a reason why this convention is in place).
[edit] Infobox information
The Infobox to use for this project is Template:Infobox NY County Route, which is derived directly from Template:Infobox road.
This is the basic syntax you need to get a complete routebox on the article page, just place this before any other text and fill in the variables.

![]() |
|||||||||
County Route 62 |
|||||||||
Bronson Hill Road | |||||||||
Length: | 5.2 mi[1] (8.4 km) | ||||||||
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
South end: | ![]() ![]() |
||||||||
North end: | ![]() ![]() |
||||||||
|
For the above parameters here's what you should fill in:
- county: county the route is in
- route: route number
- road_name: street names can be listed here separated by in-line breaks (<br>) (max. three names, please)
- length_mi: This is the length of the route in miles. If you specify beyond integers (i.e. add a decimal value) you will need to set the following paramater, length_round
- length_round: If your value for length_mi is a whole number, you can omit this. Otherwise it needs to be set to the decimal precision of the length_mi paramater.
- length_ref: To do what a good article writer should, provide your reference for the length of the route using standard
- established: This is the date the route was commissioned or assigned to its current alignment
- direction_a: This should be either south or west to keep in accordance with the U.S. Roads parent project, which lists termini and junctions in progression travelling from West to East and South to North.
- starting_terminus: This is where the route begins and is either at the southern terminus or western terminus.
- junction: Any major junctions along the route should be listed here. If more than one is listed, use a <br> to break the lines
- direction_b: The opposite of direction_a
- ending_terminus: where the route ends, in accordance with the guidelines set forth with starting_terminus
So, by completing the infobox as follows, you'll get a routebox like the one to the right.

[edit] Untitled introductory section
Depending on the route this section may just name the direction (E/W or N/S) and termination points, or may go into considerable detail. However, the majority of detail, such as progress by town, should be reserved for the next section.
[edit] Route description
This section is for describing the route itself and its progression across the county. Regardless of the route's length, progression should be described from south to north, west to east.
[edit] Communities along the route
List of communities, which can range from small hamlets to large cities, along the route. Depending on the length of the route this may include only major communities, or just the few hamlets the route passes through.
[edit] Major intersections
List of the state routes, U.S. routes, Interstate routes and county routes that this route intersects with in table form.
This section is for listing all of the intersections, both actual junctions and over/underpasses, that this route has with the above route types.
This is the basic syntax you need to get a complete junction table on the article page, just place this in the Major intersections section and fill in the variables. An example of a complete table is at County Route 380 (Chautauqua County, New York).
NYint2top NYint2btm
For additional entries, use this:

For the above parameters, here's what you should fill in:
- location: name of the location without wiki markup - the location is automatically linked by the template
- lspan: number of rows the location spans - if value=1, omit this parameter
- area: (optional for use with location) used to disambiguate between town, city, village, etc.
- ctdab: (optional for use with location) further disambiguation by county (Brighton in New York is an example where this tag would be used)
- location_special: (replaces location) location where the junction is located - use for custom entries only. Wiki markup is required.
- type: noaccess, mplex (for concurrency), decomd (for decommissioned), unbuilt, closed
- mile: milepost of the junction. If unknown, leave blank.
- road: road that the article route intersects at this junction. To generate the proper coding, use , where XX is:
- NYSRInt/NY:
- NYSRInt/US:
- NYSRInt/PK:
- NYSRInt/IN:
- NYSRInt/TH:.
- NYSRInt/CR:.
- street: (optional for use with location) Used to break up monotony in sections where the route has the same town name six or more times over (see NY 33 for an example of appropriate usage).
- notes: any notes regarding that junction.
Any parameter which is empty can be omitted.
[edit] History
Any historical information known about the route should be noted.
[edit] Miscellanea
Any trivia or facts about a route (any interesting information that doesn't belong in the History section) should be placed in this section.
