[edit] English -> Japanese translations
I have reverted the rules on this page, so that it is exclusively for Japanese -> English translations again. Personally I don't mind seeing both on the same page that much, but it does mean that there are two places for the same information, and is inconsistent with other translation request pages, so on balance I think it is better this way. I have also added information on where to request English -> Japanese translations in the Japanese Wikipedia. - Grgcox 17:15, 18 September 2006 (UTC)

When we translate an article from the Japanese wikipedia, is there any particular format, or a template, to use to note this as the source of the information? Otherwise, it might look weird to not have any references cited. Thanks. LordAmeth 15:09, 2 November 2006 (UTC)
- I've been following the instructions in Wikipedia:Translations into English, where it says:

- Please do indicate in the references section of the newly created article that an article in a foreign-language Wikipedia was among your sources. For example, the references section of the article "Paragraph 175" begins, "Much of the content of this article comes from the equivalent German-language wikipedia article (retrieved September 30, 2004). The following references are cited by that German-language article..." Note that something like this (without that last sentence) would be in order even if the German-language article did not cite any references of its own.

[edit] Request for Clarification
I don't understand the wording of this sentence:
"This page lists translation requests of Japan-related articles from the Japanese Wikipedia into English into Japanese where the article already exists but could be expanded using the information found on the Japanese Wikipedia."
The part that confuses me is the phrase "into English into Japanese".
Has an error been made here? If so, can someone please correct it? Thanks, --Skb8721 21:44, 8 December 2006 (UTC)
- You're right. I've deleted "into Japanese". (The method for requesting English-to-Japanese translations is arguably less than ideal, but the instructions on this page are the way it is at the moment.) -- Grgcox 07:48, 9 December 2006 (UTC)

The translation project has been entirely revamped and is now here. The new page dealing with translations from Japanese is at Wikipedia:Translation/ ja. Wikipedia:WikiProject Japan/Japan-related translation requests is to be redirected to the new Japanese translation page.

- This wasn't discussed at all. Please note that the Japanese translations page was a huge mess before we adopted it and cleaned it up (big thanks to everyone who's kept on top of it). - Hello, and thanks for your speedy response.
- It was discussed on the old translation project page (WP:TIE, which now redirects to the new project). I see that there has been a disconnect between the main translation pages and this one. That is exactly what we are trying to avoid by centralising the translations in one project (with subpages for the most active languages, such as German, French, etc), so that all translators can communicate easily with one another and help each other if need be.
- If, however, the consensus in the community of Japanese translators is to keep the old page, we will have to discuss things further. Maybe you could keep the pages and use the new templates. I just don't know, as I need more feedback before I can go on and modify pages along with Jmfayard.
- Please do feel free to explore the new project and experiment with putting up new requests. It may look intimidating at first (I know it scared me a bit when it launched on the French-language Wikipedia!), but it's really quite simple to use.

- If you prefer to keep your actual page, go for it, no problem. But I just felt like you maybe two months ago that the organization of the translations was a mess, and tried like you to clean up, a bit further I think, first in fr:Projet:Traduction then in place of Wikipedia:Translation into English.
- For example, just compare the simplicity of the syntax :
{{Wikipedia:Translation/Osaka Science Museum}} {{Wikipedia:Translation/National Museum of Art, Osaka}} {{Wikipedia:Translation/Natori, Miyagi}}
which gives quite the same thing that what you have here :

- If the problem is that there hasn't been a discussion yet, why not hold a discussion now? Personally, I'm leaning towards supporting the move. It makes the Japanese translation page easier to find and automates everything a little more. Changing to another format doesn't diminish the work done by the editors of WikiProject Japan up to now.
- Anyway, there aren't very many active translators working on this page as it is. Perhaps changing the format will help to attract more. I hope that other editors will add their opinions. -- Grgcox 19:48, 29 December 2006 (UTC)

- I found the automation somewhat encouraging. I think it probably makes requests simpler as well. I never worked on the page here, but I have already started working on the other one. There need to be some modifications to the grammar, but the person who wrote the page is obviously not a native English speaker. We can work it out. Dekimasu 03:08, 7 January 2007 (UTC)

If you look at Wikipedia:Translation/*/Lang/ja and check related changes, it will show some translation requests from today that don't appear in the list on the page. Maybe there is a lag or they haven't been categorized, but I couldn't find a simple way to move them onto the page (I might have removed some that previously did appear on the page, and this only relates to the "related changes" from today). - That's because there is no automation... yet ;-) When the translation stage changes, the contributor has to manually follow simple instructions displayed on the translation subpage, so that the translation page is **displayed** in the relevant pages.
- For example, this user just finished to proof-read a page do then this, this, that and that
- But I began to work a few days ago on a automation of this. It is the next step.
