WQBR-AM is the student radio station of Eastern Michigan University, though it formerly broadcast carrier current on 610 AM, the signal is no longer receivable more than 10 feet from the Quirk building. It is currently only available on Eastern Michigan University Cable Channel 10. The station airs from September through April, on a mixed schedule from studios located in the Quirk Building.
[edit] History
Originally WQBR was on the air in 1968 as WEMU-AM, sharing facilities with WEMU-FM. When WEMU-FM moved to King Hall in 1976, WEMU-AM took over the entire Quirk studios and changed its name to WHUR ("Huron Radio", taken from the university's now-banned nickname). By 1982, it was WQBR (Quirk Building Radio), airing on 640 AM and 96.7 University cable FM. The FM was dropped in the early 90's and replaced by University Cable Channel 10. In 1992, due to interference by CFCO, a station in Sarnia, Ontario at 630 AM, WQBR moved to 610 AM.
