Wyoming Area School District

The Wyoming Area School District lies along the banks of the Susquehanna River in the Wyoming Valley in northeastern Pennsylvania. The district was formed from the merger of five community schools in 1966. They included Exeter, Exeter Township, West Pittston, West Wyoming, and Wyoming.[1] It is comprised of four lower schools and one central secondary.

The Secondary Center is currently ranked in the top 125 high schools in Pennsylvania[2].
Academic Team Achievements
- Wyoming Area was the regional Science Olympiad competition champion in 2005 and placed in the top ten in the Pennsylvania State Science Olympiad Competition.
- Wyoming Area Shore Bowl team finished second in 2003, 2004, 2005 and 2006 and finished first and undefeated in 2007 in the National Ocean Sciences Bowl regional competition held annually at Rutgers University in New Jersey.
- The Wyoming Area JETS team finished second in the regional competition in 2005.
- The Wyoming Area Kane Physics Competition team finished first in the competition in 2004 and second in 2005.
- Michael Coolbaugh and Maria Gubbiotti won the Brain Bee Regional Competition in 2005 and 2006 respectively. Both went on to compete in the International Competition.

Wyoming Area School District has a strong tradition of excellence on the field. They have had several district championship football teams, the most recent in 2004 by defeating our rival school district, Pittston Area by a score of 28 - 21. Several players have gone on to play NCAA Division I Football at schools such as Williams College, Bucknell University, and William and Mary. Baseball is also a major sport at Wyoming Area and students are continuously recruited by schools such as Bucknell to play at their institution. Other sports include basketball, volleyball, golf, soccer, field hockey, cross country, swimming, track and field, tennis, and marching band.
[edit] Extra Curricular Programs, Clubs, and Organizations
The Wyoming Area Secondary Center provides its students with various extracurricular activities aside from sports. These activities include clubs such as the Key Club, Builder's Club, Student Council, Art Club, FBLA, SADD, TATU, and Drama Club. Many prestigious students are accepted to the National Honor Society. The Journalism Club, Yearbook, and the WAVE (Wyoming Area Visual Entertainment) are some other organizations in which the students may participate in. Wyoming Area has also accepted the chess club as an official club this year.
