[edit] Basic Introduction
My name is Jason Hare (Hebrew name, for religious purposes, יונה מישאל בן אברהם). My hobbies include singing in the local Barbershop chorus and in a quartet that is just now forming (as of October 2006), studying languages (Classical and Koine Greek, Biblical and Modern Hebrew, Spanish, American Sign Language, Arabic, etc.), studying basic syntax, and reading Harry Potter books (though I am quite new to this).
I like the study of religion and philosophy as well, but often I find that things get too complicated when people are arguing about religion. I guess I like philosophy as it used to be, among the Greeks. I do not enjoy much of philosophy since Descartes -- though Nietzsche makes a fascinating read for me.

As far as philosophy is concerned, I am kinda eclectic. I don't have a specific philosophy that I hold to (which is why I don't call myself a philosopher properly), but I really enjoy the study of philosophy. My favorite philosophers to read are Plato (obviously), Nietzsche (yeah!), and Aristotle. I enjoy informal logic and debate, as well as formal logic. Philosophy is fun all around.
I converted to Reform Judaism on 6 Dec 2003, and I am totally in love with Torah and Jewish life in general. From time to time I have the opportunity to lead services at the local synagogue (United Hebrew Congregation of Joplin), where I have my membership.
I've gone through times of mild atheism and strong belief in God. I don't judge people by what they believe, but I think that ethics is far more important than dogma.
[edit] Language Experience
Language is the one area in which I have more experience than the majority of people that I have ever met. There have been a few who have known more languages better than I, but they are generally professors of language. I do not mean to say this with pride, but one should know in which areas he is strong.
I am currently working on my seventh language (Arabic). I want to enumerate them below, so that — if I should happen to appear to be an authority on any other — you will know which ones I am actually familiar with and to what extent.
- English
- I don't think I should have to do anything to demonstrate that I know English sufficiently. lol
- Hebrew (עברית)
- As a student at Ozark Christian College (OCC), I studied four semesters of Classical (Biblical) Hebrew grammar under Dr. Larry Pechawer. I started attending the United Hebrew Congregation of Joplin during my second year of Hebrew study. Hebrew is a regularly employed language in my daily life. I use it for prayer and for Torah study. At times, I even have the opportunity to chat in Hebrew with friends online.
- Koine Greek (ἡ κοινὴ διάλεκτος)
- Greek became a regular course of study for me when I was 17 years old. As a senior in high school, I did not spend my time going to parties, but I spent long nights memorizing verbal conjugation paradigms and noun declension charts! When I entered OCC, I took the requisite English placement exam, scoring high enough to forgoe studying English and begin my formal study of the Koine. For a while I was a regular contributor on the B-Greek forum (under a different name).
- American Sign Language (Ameslan, ASL)
- I became intrigued with ASL when I was 13. It was my first "foreign language," and I soaked it up with passion. Actually, I started by learning Signed Exact English (SEE2). At the age of 15 I was introduced to Pidgin, which is now known as Conceptually-Accurate Signed English (CASE). At 18 I began the study of American Sign Language grammar and syntax.
- German (Hoch Deutsch)
- I took four semesters of German language (GER 101-204) at Missouri Southern. I am definitely not an authority on German! Mein Deutsch ist sehr schlecht!
- Spanish (Español)
- Spanish is my major course of study at Missouri Southern. As far as fluency, I am native in English, fluent in American Sign Language, and mostly fluent in Spanish. I use Hebrew daily, but I am far from fluent.
- Arabic (العربيه)
- I'm very BAD at Arabic! I took two semesters of Arabic as undergraduate studies.
As far as other languages are concerned, I've spent some time with Latin and French. I am definitely not studied on any oriental language at all. I'm definitely a Western person. :">
