Zipolite
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Zipolite is a small beach community which lies on the Pacific coast of the southern state of Oaxaca, Mexico, about three kilometers west of the village of Puerto Angel. The name Zipolite, sometimes spelled Sipolite or Cipolite, may have come from the Nahuatl word sipolitlan or zipotli, bumpy place or place of continuous bumps or hills. Another possible origin of the name is from the Zapotec language, meaning beach of the dead (la playa de los muertos), so called for its dangerous ocean currents, riptide or undertow, which have taken numerous lives. Or as many visitors would tell you Beach of the Dead refers to the lifestyle there: once at Zipolite many find it difficult to leave this relaxing oasis behind. "I'm leaving mañana" is the mantra of this beach, for many, though, mañana doesn't come for at least a couple of weeks longer than planned.

A popular destination for backpackers, Zipolite caters to a mostly younger crowd, many of them from Europe, Canada and the USA. One of the attractions is la Playa del Amor, or Beach of Love, which is, unofficially, clothing-optional.
