Cradle of Filth es una banda de Black Metal, Procedentes del Reino Unido específicamente de la ciudad de Ipswich, condado de Suffolk (Sureste de Inglaterra).

Dani Filth, el vocalista del grupo

Formados a principios de los 90, su estilo era en un principio Black metal crudo, pero luego aparecieron teclados simples. Su transformación ha sido grave. Ahora tienen un estilo marcado y propio, con un teclado hábil y armonioso. Una guitarra con ciertos riffs maidenescos y una atmósfera siniestra. Dani Filth, el carismático vocalista, puede producir sonidos muy graves y cambiar rápidamente a una voz aguda/chillona (gutural vampírico), una de las características de la banda. Además de eso, la segunda voz femenina, la corista Sarah Jezebel Deva (antes vocalista colaboradora de Therion), alcanza notas dignas de una soprano. La guitarra pesada tiene un estilo black metal y los teclados pródigos siempre acompañan dando como resultado una música oscura, funesta. Una de las fuentes de inspiración de la banda son los temas terroríficos, románticos, funestos o reales, como por ejemplo la muerte, el invierno, el amor, seres macabros que existieron (por ejemplo la condesa Bathory) y otros temas ficticios (como Cthulhu). Los autores del terror como por ejemplo Lovecraft, Baudelaire y Allan Poe (quien aparece caracterizado en el videoclip de Mannequin) son reconocidos por ellos.

El estilo de Cradle ha variado a lo largo del tiempo, desde que empezaron con un Black Metal crudo, más tradicional, han ido añadido elementos de Thrash Metal, Death Metal o Gothic Metal hasta convertirse en un estilo más sinfónico y claro. Todo ello les ha otorgado una imagen mucho más conocida (llegando a aparecer incluso en MTV) lo que ha causado que tengan muchos detractores que acusan a su música de ser un producto comercial, en vez de auténtico sonido metal. Para los puristas del género Black Metal Cradle of Filth es una banda poser, que no le interesa su musica sinoun poco de fama y dinero. Cradle of filth se transformó junto con Dimmu Borgir en bandas que le dieron otro sentido al black metal; aunque su estilo no es muy parecido, Dimmu Borgir (black metal melódico y sinfónico) mientras que Cradle of Filth (Black metal romántico y gótico). También se le ha comparado con la banda Hecate Enthroned ya que, en el año 1997, Hecate Enthroned saca su primer lanzamiento de su álbum integral, The Slaughter of Innocence (A Requiem for the Mighty), así como viajes con bandas como: Dark Funeral, Enthroned, Sigh and Usurper. Aunque este lanzamiento muchos otros lo han puesto en ridículo por su parecido a Cradle of Filth con sonido "copiado", principalmente en el acercamiento vocal de Jon, aunque sobre escucha, los sonidos de ambas bandas eran absolutamente diferentes; Hecate Enthroned está más influenciada por la guitarra y straight-forward en términos de arreglo. Y Cradle of Filth opta más por la locura sinfónica y el teclado pesado. Además las estructuras líricas eran diferentes pues de Cradle of filth es sobre el vampirismo erótico y el de Hecate sobre temas referentes directamente al satanismo.

La banda también cuenta con otras producciones como DVD´s e incluso una película, "Cradle of Fear", película gore en la que Dani Filth encarna a un demonio que persigue víctimas a lo largo de la película, pero hay un detective siguiendo su actividad. También aparece un personaje del videoclip Her ghost in the fog como el padre de Dani (The Old Man), el personaje de Dani es "The Man" y solo habla una vez en la película.
