The Karmabanque website provides an index of both ill-will and financial vulnerability of each corporation, thus allowing activists to choose the most effective boycotts to support while simultaneously promoting short selling of company stocks by financial speculators.
Unlike the Corporate Social Responsibility and Ethical Investing movements, which engage the Chief Executive Officer of a corporation in dialogue in order to encourage the company to behave better, Karmabanque engages the market via a company's share price, one of the only indicators to which a Chief Executive Officer is legally obliged to respond.
Karmabanque was launched by Max Keiser on Bastille Day, 2002. Keiser previously created the Hollywood Stock Exchange based on the virtual specialist technology, for which he was awarded a United States patent.
Karmabanque announced the world's first activist hedge fund in December 2004. The announcement received worldwide press coverage including, amongst others, the Washington Post, the Guardian, and CBS Marketwatch. Following Karmabanque's announcement, a rival mutual fund was created with an opposite intent by Fox News online journalist, Steve Milloy. See story.
Regarding the Karmabanque hedge fund, the Washington Legal Foundation issued an opinion, of which the following is an excerpt: "Defenders of free enterprise might be tempted to decry this attack on icons of capitalism. But capitalists should welcome Mr. Keiser and other activists to their fold. Whatever their aims, at least they recognize the power of markets and appreciate that not all problems require a government solution. In the end, perhaps defenders of capitalism should welcome their newfound friends [at Karmabanque.]" Washington Legal Foundation January 28, 2005, Vol 15, No.2, Author Larry Ribstein
