This maps show the most likely locations of the wichcraft schools in Europe according to the Harry Potter books. For the school locations:
- Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry: Scotland, but not too close to a main city (desolate surroundings).
- Beauxbatons Academy of Magic: Clues are 1. language, 2. warm weather, 3. bouillabaisse. These lead to the mediterranean coast of France
- Durmstrang Institute for Magical Study: Clues are 1. Dumbledore says they are "from the North", which means higher latitude than Scotland. 2. Students speak with a Slavic accent, not a German accent 3. Viktor Krum (of Bulgarian nationality) is a student. 4. Igor Karkaroff is a distinctively Slavic name. 5. Viktor says that Durmstrang grounds contain mountains and a lake, like Hogwarts 6. The days are very short in winter. I have therefore placed Durmstrang in the few places that are populated with Slavic speaking people, and have both mountains and lakes, and that are higher than Scotland in latitude.
Recruitment grounds: The idea in this map is that the language barrier is a major issue for learning and therefore the recruitment ground has some linguistic basis. Hogwarts recruitment is only from UK and Ireland (JKR never mentions any other nationality). Beaubatons uses the French language which must make the school quite inaccessible to non-Latin language speakers. Durmstrang, to attract so many Slavic speakers, must teach in some Slavic language (most probably Russian, given its possible locations) and therefore is fairly easily accessible to speaker of other Slavic languages (like Bulgarians, Poles etc.), but my assumption is that it is not readily available to German native speakers, despite its name. (E.g. St Petersburg is a very German name, but is definitely a place in Russia). This leaves the people speaking a Germanic language without a school to go to, which is an interesting missing element in Harry Potter's world.
