Seymour Martin Lipset

Seymour Martin Lipset (født 18. mars 1922 i New York, død 31. desember 2006) var en amerikansk politisk sosiolog og statsviter. Lipset var sønn av jødiske innvandrere fra Russland. Han tok doktorgraden i sosiologi ved Universitetet i Columbia i 1949 og var den eneste som har vært leder av både American Sociological Association (1992–93) og American Political Science Association (1979–80).

Sentralt i Lipsets forskning står studiet av demokratiets sosiokulturelle og historisk-økonomiske betingelser. Lipset forklarte sammenhengen mellom økonomisk utvikling og demokrati, en innsikt som har gjort ham til en av de mest siterte statsvitere gjennom tidene. Andre temaer som opptok Lipset var fagbevegelser, sosial lagdeling, offentlig opinion, det intellektuelle livs sosiologi, politisk ekstremisme, samt spørsmålet om hvorfor sosialismen aldri fikk skikkelig tak på det nordamerikanske kontinent.
