[edit] Summary

Frieze portraying foreigners in Greek attire worshiping the Buddhist stupa of Sanchi in Central India. Sanchi, northern gate. 2nd-1st century BCE. All the lower half of the frieze is occupied by men in non-armoured military uniform consisting in short tunics, a chlamys cape, light belt, no trousers, and pedila-type laced sandals (reference, also). They have short hair, straight to curly, non-bearded, and often wearing a headband. Two other men have a pilos cap. Two of the instruments are of Scythian origin, but were adopted by the Greek: the carnyx (κάρνυξ) trumpets, also equivalent to the Roman lituus. The third man uses an aulos, a typical Greek double-flute.
The lowermost row consists in men playing music: two carnyxes, a double-flute, two drums, and two other non-defined instruments.
The second row consist in men making offerings and forming praying gestures. Two of them (no5 and no6 from left) hold guirlands inside round shields. The 7th one holds a banner.
The third row consists of men entering the stupa with guirlands and presents.
The higher levels are occupied by flying divinities in Indian dress.
