Great Plains

The Great Plains is a region of North America. It is in the western United States and western Canada.
The Great Plains are east of the Rocky Mountains and west of the prairies. It is a dry region. There are few trees on the Great Plains. It is mostly grasslands. The population of the Great Plains is much lower than other regions of the United States and Canada.
In the United States, the Great Plains are in the states of Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Wyoming, Nebraska, Colorado, Kansas, Oklahoma, New Mexico, and Texas.
In Canada, the Great Plains are in the provinces of Alberta and Saskatchewan.
The climate of the Great Plains is extreme. In winter, the Great Plains are cold. In summer, they are very hot.
Farming is difficult on the Great Plains. Farming on the Great Plains usually requires irrigation. Before the 20th century, the Great Plains was home to large herds of bison. In the 19th century, the Great Plains was the location of great cattle drives.
Much of the northern Great Plains in the United States is drained by the Missouri River. In the 19th century, the Missouri River was an important route of transportation across the Great Plains.
Sixty-five million years ago, the Great Plains was covered by a shallow inland sea. The Great Plains contains large deposits of coal and petroleum.
