The Count of Monte Cristo

The Count of Monte Cristo is a revenge novel by Alexandre Dumas. It is also a tragedy. The main character of the book, Edmond Dantes, is unfairly accused of treason and sent to prison. Having been taken away from his lover, Mercedes, he is consumed by sadness which is turned into hatred and an overwhelming desire for revenge. Dantes escapes from prison and carries out a complicated plot of revenge, but he is so consumed by his passion he cannot love Mercedes anymore. That is why it is a tragedy.
