Marked as a possible hoax - but there is probably simply confusion about spelling.

Spelling. The ASC Ms C for 924 says
| | Her Eadweard cing gefor on Myrcum æt Fearndune, 7 Ælfweard his sunu swiþe hraþe þæs gefor on Oxnaforda, 7 heora lic licgað on Wintanceastre. 7 Æþestan wæs of Myrcum gecoren to cinge 7 æt Cingestune gehalgod. |
The trusty Blackwell Encyclopedia of Anglo-Saxon England says (under Æthelstan)
| | His father, Edward the Elder, died in July 924. Edward's son and Æthelstan's half-brother Ælfweard succeeded, but died within a month. |

Ælfweard of Wessex would seem appropriate. I've always understood Athelstan to be the first real "King of England"... john k 18:01, 10 September 2006 (UTC)
