- January 16 - The Grote Mandrenke hits sections of northern Europe, causing at least 25,000 deaths and flooding large pieces of land.
- February 22 - Galileo's Dialogue Concerning the Two Chief World Systems is published.
- March 29 - Treaty of Saint-Germain signed, returning Quebec to French control after the English had seized it in 1629.
- April 15 - Battle of Rain: Swedes under Gustavus Adolphus defeat the Holy Roman Empire during the Thirty Years' War.
- June 25 - Susenyos' son, Emperor Fasilides, declared the state religion to again be Ethiopian Orthodox Christianity, and expelled the Jesuit missionaries and other Europeans.
