- 16 January - The Treaty (or Act) of Union between the Kingdom of England and the Kingdom of Scotland is ratified by the Parliament of Scotland.
- 19 March - The Treaty of Union is ratified by the Parliament of England.
- 1 May - The Acts of Union becomes law, uniting the Parliaments of the England and Scotland to form the Parliament of Great Britain.
- 22 October - Four British Royal Navy ships, including HMS Association, run aground near Scilly Isles because of faulty navigation — Admiral Sir Cloudesley Shovell and thousands of sailors drown.
- 23 October - First sitting of the Parliament of Great Britain in London.
