- 9 January - Prime Minister William Pitt the Younger introduces an income tax of two shillings to the pound[1] to raise funds for Great Britain's war effort in the Napoleonic Wars.
- 27 August - British and Russian expedition to the Batavian Republic (now the Netherlands).
- 30 August - British forces under Sir Ralph Abercromby and Admiral Sir Charles Mitchell capture the entire Dutch fleet.
- 9 October - Sinking of HMS Lutine, a famous treasure wreck.
