1840 Constitution of the Kingdom of Hawaii
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The 1840 Constitution of the Kingdom of Hawaiʻi was the second constitution in the Hawaiian Islands, for the sovereign state known as the Kingdom of Hawaiʻi. Promulgated by Kamehameha III, the version of the Constitution of Hawaiʻi established a constitutional monarchy subjecting even the king to certain principles of democracy. It superseded the 1839 constitution.
Prominently featured in the document are the proclamation of the House of Kamehameha as the official dynastic line, establishment of the office of Premier of the Kingdom of Hawaiʻi, or kuhina nui to be head of government, founding of the legislature consisting of a House of Representatives and House of Nobles, creation of the office of governor of the various islands and recognition of Christianity as an authority.
