- January 30 - Mahatma Gandhi, leader of the independence movement and champion of non-violent protest (Ahimsa), is assassinated.
- March 8 - Air India International incorporated.
- June 8 - Air India International inaugurated its international services with a weekly flight from Bombay to London via Cairo and Geneva.
- June 28 - Chakravarti Rajagopalachari succeeds Earl Mountbatten as governor-general.
