1988 Giro d'Italia

The 1988 Giro d'Italia was held 23 May through 12 June. Andy Hampsten became the first American and non-European to win the Giro d'Italia. In addition to the maglia rosa, Hampsten also collected the maglia verde for the climbers competition and two stage wins.
Johan van der Velde won his third and final Maglia ciclamino; he had previously won the points competition at the 1985 and 1987 Giro d'Italia.
This 71st edition covered 3,759 km at an average speed of 36.788 km/h with 125 of the 180 riders completing the 23 stage course.
