[edit] In mathematics

227 is a prime number, and a twin prime with 229 (thus 227 is a Chen prime). 223 plus 4 is 227, so they are cousin primes. 227 plus 6 is 233, making 227 and 233 sexy primes; furthermore, 227, 233, and 239 form a sexy prime triplet.

Since (227 - 1)/2 is 113, also a prime, 227 is a safe prime.

It is also a regular prime. 227 is an Eisenstein prime with no imaginary part, and also a Gaussian prime. 227 is a Stern prime since it is not of the form p + 2b2.

It can be written as the sum of the sum and the product of the first four primes: (2 + 3 + 5 + 7)+(2 \times 3 \times 5 \times 7) = 227

[edit] In popular culture

The number 227 and the number that reverses its digits (722) are used in movies and television more than proportionally with other 3-digit numbers between 100 and 999. No known explanation has been published, but perhaps it uses cultural and aesthetic norms such as 7 being considered a lucky number, and the roundness, balance, and repetition of 22 being considered beautiful.[citation needed] For a list of proportionality of number use in popular media, see number proportions in popular media. A probable example of that use is the American sitcom 227's title, a reference to the number of the apartment building where the main characters live.
