Actually, I don't know if I like being a member of wikipedia. Because frankly, a lot of people here seem to have absolutely no respect for information. You are all so delete happy. It's a power trip.
Well, news for you: Wikipedia is not a very good basic encyclopedia for most academic issues. If I wanted a solid academic encyclopedia, I would get the appropriate Oxford companion or similar volume.
What Wikipedia excells at, and what makes it amazing (so long as the delete button queens can be controlled) is the fact that it records and details phenomenon which are real, which are important (because all human activity is important) and which no one else will record. Internet phenomenon, webcomics, memes and silly jokes, made-up religions, tiny bands, crazy people, unaccredited diploma mills. When I hear about something like this, where do I head to find out about it? Wikipedia.
Unless, of course, some idiot has deleted it for being "not notable". Well, it's notable enough for me to be looking, and now I'm just damn frustrated.
Wikipedians who spend their time deleting articles are destroying Wikipedia.
