84 and 86 (New Jersey bus)

The 84 Bergenline/Park Avenues and 86 Nungessers-Newport Mall are two bus routes operated by New Jersey Transit in Hudson County, New Jersey, United States. Buses begin at Journal Square (84), Newport Centre Mall (86), or Exchange Place (a few 86 trips), and travel north along Palisade Avenue to Washington Park, then along a one-way pair of New York Avenue (northbound) and Bergenline Avenue (southbound) to Route 495. Normal 84 trips continue north to the Bergenline Avenue station of the Hudson-Bergen Light Rail, and then in both directions on Bergenline Avenue to Nungessers. Park Avenue 84 trips and all 86 trips turn east on 30th and 31st Streets (Route 495's frontage roads) and north on Park Avenue; normal 86 trips turn west on 48th Street to the light rail station, while all Park Avenue 84 trips and some 86 trips continue north, ending at Nungessers.

Public Service Transportation acquired the 44 Bergenline bus route in 1927; NJ Transit renumbered it to 84 in 1982. The 86 was started as a variant to Newport Mall and Exchange Place in 1991.[citation needed] Almost all 84 and 86 trips ended at Nungessers, both routes via either Bergenline Avenue or Park Avenue,[1] until April 8, 2006, about 1.5 months after the Bergenline Avenue station of the Hudson-Bergen Light Rail opened. In order to "take advantage of the light rail system's reliability and convenience", the 86 was modified to use Park Avenue at all times, and to end at the light rail station at all times but rush hours. Travelers from Bergenline Avenue to Newport Mall or Exchange Place are directed to take the 84 or another Bergenline Avenue bus and transfer to the light rail.[2]
