Abe F. March
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Abe F. March (born 1939) is the author of To Beirut and Back - An American in the Middle East (ISBN 1-4241-3853-1). In his book he recounts the years shortly before and including the beginning of the Lebanese Civil War (1975-1990).
Abe March was born in the US state of Pennsylvania. After military service with the US Air Force in France, and then in Germany (1957-61) where he met and married his German wife, he began a business career at IBM. In 1969 he became a sales executive for a cosmetics company on assignment in the USA, Canada, Greece (in 1972 - 73 during the Papadopoulos dictatorship) and Germany. In 1974 he founded his own cosmetics firm "Beauty Magic" in Beirut, Lebanon.
Events in the Spring 1975 which would lead to the Lebanese Civil War made business increasingly difficult and when he and his wife attempted to access his office building near the Avenue Fouad Chehab they were abducted and held for a few hours by one of the warring factions. They were released after his captors convinced themselves that he was American and not party to the conflict.
The Lebanese Civil War ruined his enterprise in 1975. After several inconclusive attempts to reenter the Middle Eastern market (1976-1977) he settled in the United States, became an independent entrepreneur and finally worked as an executive for Fokker Services. In 2001 he retired and moved with his wife to Germany where he still resides.
In May 2006 he published his memoirs regarding his years as cosmetics executive and enterprise owner in the Middle East (1969-1977)
He is also listed as an Expert on Israeli-Palestinian ProCon.org.
