Abia is the mother of Hezekiah, King of Judah. (2 Chr. 29:1) A variant tradition records her name as Abi. (2 Kings 18:2) Abia is translated from Hebrew as "My father is the Lord" or "God is my father."
In the New Testament, the Greek form is Abijah, or Abijam (Matt. 1:7), instead of Abiah (1 Chr. 7:8). In Luke 1:5, the name refers to the head of the eighth of the twenty-four courses into which David divided the priests (1 Chr. 24:10).
