Acheiropoietoi

Acheiropoietoi is a Greek word that literally means "not made with hands." It often refers to things believed to be derived from divine origin in Christianity, such as the Shroud of Turin.
Author Ewa Kuryluk observed that, in regards to acheiropoietoi and Christianity, "In order to establish Christ, masses of potential converts had to be convinced of the existence of a unique Man-God. Material proofs of his presence on earth were highly desirable; photographs would have been extremely helpful. Thus were acheiropoietoi invented--traces, relics, and likenesses of the one and only `true' God."[1]
