Acterra: Action for a Sustainable Earth is a nonprofit environmental education and action organization based in Palo Alto, California. It was formed in 2001 by the merger of two predecessor nonprofits, Bay Area Action and the Peninsula Conservation Center Foundation.
Acterra has its headquarters at the Peninsula Conservation Center, located at 3921 East Bayshore Road, Palo Alto. The PCC building is also home to several other local environmental organizations, including Committee for Green Foothills.
In pursuit of its stated mission "to create local solutions that foster a healthy natural environment", Acterra operates several programs in the local community including a collaborative land stewardship project on the Arastradero Preserve, an open space parcel in the foothills west of Stanford University. Since 1997, this innovative arrangement with the City of Palo Alto has brought community volunteers and Acterra staff to the Preserve for trailbuilding and environmental restoration work--removing invasive non-native thistles, grasses, and trees, and planting native grasses and trees [1].
Acterra also offers an environmental leadership training program, "Be The Change" [2], and sometimes offers fiscal sponsorship to other local environmental projects and startups that do not yet wish to incorporate as independent 501(c)(3) organizations. A complete list of Acterra's programs and services can be found here.
