Adventuress
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Adventuress is a 136-foot gaff-rigged schooner launched in 1913 at the Rice Brothers' Yard in East Boothbay, Maine, and now restored and listed as a National Historic Landmark.
Her first owner sold her the next year to the San Francisco Bar Pilot's Association, which marked the beginning of her career as a workboat. For 35 years, she transferred pilots to and from cargo vessels near the Farrallone Islands. During World War II, she was a United States Coast Guard vessel, guarding San Francisco Bay.
About 1960, she was brought to Seattle, and went through several owners, eventually winding up in the care of Monty Morton and Ernestine Bennett, who managed a non-profit organization called Youth Adventures. The vessel was eventually restored to its former glory and listed as a National Historic Landmark in 1989. She is now operated by Sound Experience, a non-profit organization based in Port Townsend, Washington. The ship hosts environmental education programs April through October.
