[edit] History
Air Malawi was established by Act of Parliament and started operations on 1 September 1967 following the dissolution of Central African Airways. It succeeded another airline of the same name which had been established a s a subsidiary of Central African Airways in 1964. The first Air Malawi aircraft were Vickers Viscounts, later supplemented by BAC 1-11s extending regional routes out to Harare, Johannesburg and Nairobi. In 1974 a London Heathrow service was started using a Vickers VC-10 in full livery although this service had stopped by the end of the 1970s. Short Skyvan, Britten-Norman Islander and Hawker Siddeley HS-748 aircraft were used for local and regional routes. These were replaced in the 1990s with Dornier 228 and ATR 42 aircraft. In 1985 a Boeing 747SP was leased by the airline for VIP and Government flights. The BAC 1-11 was replaced with a Boeing 737.
