Al-Nouri mosque

Also called "The Grand Mosque" The site of the Al-Nouri mosuqe is believed to be the location of the Sun Temple in ancient Emesa. When the Muslim armies took over Homs, Syria it was the site of St. John Church. , they turned half of the Church into a mosque. After a local rebelion in the times of the Abbasides the the part that housed the church was added to the mosque. Nur ad-Din Mahmud ibn-Zengi ordered it rebuilt in 1129 A.D uopn its destruction by an earthquake.
