Indirect presidential elections will be held in Albania in July 2007.[1]
According to the Albanian Constitution the President is elected by the Assembly. In the first two rounds 2/3 of the votes are required, while in the third round a simple majority may elect the new president.
In 2002, Alfred Moisiu was elected as a consensual president and was accepted by both the majority and the opposition parties. It is very likely that Moisiu will not be reelected, while Bamir Topi is the candidate of the right-wing parties that have the majority in the parliament.
Current prime minister and former president Sali Berisha has advocated for a president elected by direct popular suffrage. Due to time, such changes can not take place before the 2007 elections.
