From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Alberta Ballet Company, in Edmonton, Alberta, was founded by Ruth Carse in the late 1950's and became a professional company in 1966.
In 1990 the company merged with the Calgary City Ballet and moved into the Nat Christie Centre in Calgary. It continues to provide ballet peformances in both Edmonton and Calgary.
The current artistic director is Jean Grand-MaƮtre and the current General Director is Michele Stanners.
The 2006-07 season will feature the following ballets: Carmina Burana, The Nutcracker, Dancing Joni (an evening featuring choreography to the works of Joni Mitchell), Cinderella and Dracula, performed by the Royal Winnipeg Ballet. Subscriptions for this season are at record levels - up 40% on the previous year.
In an attempt to generate more interest in ballet within Edmonton and Calgary's youth (18 - 35), Alberta Ballet launched it's ATTITUDE program in 2005. Initially sponsored by Big Rock Brewery and EPCOR, Albertans who fell into this age group could sign up to attend free performances and enjoy pizza and beer on the house. This program then spawned the Community Engagement Council of the Alberta Ballet - a council of young people - who are now responsible for sustaining the Attitude program and finding other ways of engaging young people in the work of the company.
