Alberta, Canada has the following types of publicly funded school boards:
- Public English (normally just called Public) - These are open to any student regardless of their religion or language (e.g. even if they can't speak any English they must still be accepted).
- Separate Catholic English (normally just called "Separate" or "Catholic") - These are open to all baptized Roman Catholic students, and may also accept non-Catholic students, when space is available.
- Separate Protestant English - There is just one board of this type in the province.
- Public Francophone - Much smaller than English boards, they only accept students from Francophone (French speaking) parents
- Separate Catholic Francophone - Very small. Where the Francophone numbers are very small Public and Separate may co-exist in one board.
Some use the term "district" in their name, others call themselves "boards", and others have neither term in their title. Technically "district" refers to the area of jurisdiction and "board" refers to the governing body, but the terms are often used interchangeably. Overlapping territories means more than one school board can be in this category for the same geographical area (for instance, there are four school boards based in Calgary).
Note: Each charter school has its own independent "board" (not district), but they do not belong in this category. Charter "boards" should be discussed in the school's individual article, and put in the appropriate school categories.
