Alejo Duran

Gilberto Alejandro Durán Diaz, known to all as Alejo Durán was born on February 9, 1919 in El Paso (Cesar), in Colombia. He was a legendary composer of vallenatos. Carlos Vives often covers his songs. He is notorious for self-flagellating himself in his own songs, possibly as a defense mechanism for contests in Valledupar. He was elected as the first "King of Vallenatos" in 1968 during the first Vallenato Festival in Colombia. He is often recognized as the best Vallenato musician of all time. Alejo Duran, also commonly known as "El Negro Grande" (the Big Negro), died on November 15th, 1989 after a previous heart attack deteriorated his health.
