Alemaya University

Haramaya University (the then Alemaya University) is one of the oldest universities in Ethiopia. It is located in Haramaya, a town in the East Hararghe Zone, about 20 kilometers from Harar town and 40 kilometers from Dire Dawa town.
The University was founded with the help of Oklahoma State University, accepting its first students in 1954, and the new campus was opened in January 1958, by Emperor Haile Selassie. Haramaya university was promoted from a college within Addis Ababa University on May 27, 1985 to an independent university. For many years the University had been limited to only an agricultural curriculum, but in 1996 the university was given permission to open other faculties and departments.

- College of Agriculture
- Faculty of Business and Economics: One of the prominent faculties, FBE at Alemaya University is a new and a widely getting acceptance faculty. The faculty already has five departments: Computer Science and IT, Management, Accounting, Economics, and Cooperatives.
- The Computer Science and IT Department was founded in 2003. The department has five computer laboratories: three general labs (Year I, Year II, Year III), one Internet Lab and one Hardware and Networking Lab. As of March 2006, there are 10 staff: three expatriates and seven local.

Recently computer science and information technology student Samuel Kefelegn developed software which can be used to encrypt/ decrypt files.[citation needed] The software was written in C++, proving Haramaya University is creating programmers as well.
