A picturesque Lebanese City in Mount Lebanon in the Chouf mountain range. It lies close to the Beirut Damascus Highway 17km uphill from Beirut. Further up the road is the town of Bhamdoun. To the south lies the strategic town of Suk El Gharb. The word "Aley" in Aramaic-Arabic means high place.
Aley matured when the Beirut-Damascus railroad was built in 1892 - 95. The now discontinued railroad promoted the town as a summer mountain resort as tourists fled the humid sweltering Beirut weather. For a while it was the summer capital of the Ottoman governors of Mount Lebanon.
